Medina – New Sales Tax Change May Benefit You

To better facilitate the collection of sales tax on Internet and catalog sales, the State of Washington has changed the method by which sales tax is distributed to cities and towns.

Beginning July 1, 2008, sales tax is now distributed using a destination based method. What this means
to Medina resdients is that, when you purchase merchandise, like furniture and appliances, from businesses
outside Medina and have them delivered to to your home, the City of Medina will receive a portion
of the sales tax collected. Before July 1st, if you purchased an item outside Medina, even if the item
was delivered to your home, the city where the business was located would have received the sales tax.
Items such as new vehicles and watercraft are exempt from this new law.

The benefit to Medina citizens from this new method is that your sales tax money will now come back
here to help pay for police, fire, streets and other city operations, rather than, the monies going to help
another city or town.

Here’s how you can help make sure your City receives its fair share of sales tax:

  • Let businesses know that you live in the City of Medina, not Bellevue.
  • Tell them that your City’s sales tax location code is: 1718
  • Share your zip + 4 when receiving deliveries.

How to obtain your zip + 4 code:

  • Online at: http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp
  • Or by calling: 1-800-275-8777
